Gifting a new picture book or two is a great Christmas tradition around our house. In fact, one of my kids’ favorite activities during the holidays is to pull out our box of holiday books. I give them candy canes and hot chocolate, and we read our favorite stories together. It is a simple and calm way to welcome the magic of Christmas together.
If you have a little one with a December birthday, a great book about Santa and Santa’s reindeer is a fun birthday party gift. Wrap it up with their favorite Christmas candy!

The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett
The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett is one of my favorite reindeer books to read at Christmas. This is a story of a little girl named Teeka whose job it is to train Santa’s reindeer for Christmas Eve. The little reindeer are a bit wild and mischievous, but young Teeka pulls it off by the big night.
It is a sweet story with beautiful illustrations by Jan Brett. This is a great book that is also perfect to combine with Brett’s other fantastic holiday stories, like The Mitten, Three Snow Bears, Cozy, and The Snowy Nap. Brett’s lovely books with winter scenes and polar animals are the perfect books to curl up with a hot chocolate and your little ones.
In my second-grade classroom, I like to add all of Brett’s books to our read-aloud book boxes. Young readers and older readers will appreciate her detailed drawings and lovely stories.
Imogene’s Antlers by David Small
Imogene’s Antlers by David Small is such a fun story. Imogene wakes up to find that she has grown antlers! Every time I read this in a classroom or at home, big smiles come on the kids’ faces. Imogene’s mom faints, and her doctor and school principal are less than helpful. However, the housekeeper and cook come up with some great uses for her antlers, offering some unusual reindeer skills.
After a good night of sleep, Imogene’s antlers disappear, but another surprise is in store! The fun illustrations and surprises in this hilarious story will delight any young readers in your classroom or home. Add this one to your list of best reindeer books for kids!
The Reindeer Wish by Lori Evert
The Reindeer Wish by Lori Evert is such a sweet reindeer Christmas story. This is in a series of Wish books by Evert. Anja finds a lost reindeer baby in the woods. She rescues the injured reindeer and raises it as a member of her family.
Anja and the baby reindeer enjoy many great adventures, but the reindeer eventually wants to go back with other reindeer.
Aanja leads him back to join other reindeer and eventually discovers his role in helping to pull Santa’s sleigh. This sweet story is a great addition to your holiday library.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
If you don’t already own the classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, be sure to add it to your Christmas collection. This amazing poem, originally written by Robert L. May in 1939, definitely spans the test of time.
This Golden Book edition is a sentimental favorite of mine, and young readers always love the classic story of Santa Claus recognizing the talent of the red-nosed reindeer at the North Pole. Who doesn’t love an underdog, especially at Christmas time?
Great Reindeer Rebellion by Lisa Trumbauer
The Great Reindeer Rebellion by Lisa Trumbauer is such a great Christmas book. I love a rhyming book as a read aloud for my own kids or my students. They are especially great for an emergent reader, as they help students recognize rhyming words.
In the rhythm of “The Night Before Christmas”, Santa is in a bit of a crisis as his reindeer are on strike! Who can replace them and make a new kind of reindeer express? Will it be the cats or the elephants? This is a great book to use as a writing prompt. Which animal would you choose to replace the reindeer for Santa’s sleigh and why?
Add this one to your list of best reindeer books to read this Christmas season!
Olive, the Other Reindeer by Vivian Walsh
Olive, the Other Reindeer is a sweet book about a little dog named Olive. She begins to mistakenly believe that she is actually a reindeer, meant to be a part of Santa’s reindeer team!
She gets onto the Polar Express and makes her way to the North Pole. Santa is shocked to have a dog on his team for the first time. Olive’s unusual dog-turned-reindeer skills surprise Santa but they also help the team in unique ways.
Any fans of the Olive series will love to add this one your list of best reindeer books for the holidays.
