No doubt, you will have a great time in the Disney parks, but August does tend to be the hottest month of the year. However, with a little bit of planning for your Disney World vacation packing list, you can have a fantastic time.
From personal experiences, I know you can often get great deals at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel in August and that can make a summer trip worth it. It is also a good option to travel during the second half of August when many students have started back to school earlier in the month, so the parks may be a bit less crowded. What is the weather like at Disney World in August?
What is the weather like at Disney World in August? In a word, hot. In two words, hot and humid. Hot weather is in full swing in Central Florida. It is best to be prepared with thin, lightweight clothing that can dry quickly. Quick dry fabrics are ideal for both heat and water rides. Just be sure you can’t see through your t-shirts, no matter how hot it is!
The average high temperature is around 93 degrees in Orlando in August. The average low is around 75 degrees. For the most part, the weather will be warm and humid. Remember that while making your Disney World packing list!
What to wear to Disney World in August: Think water!
When thinking about what to wear to Disney World in August, think about water! That means, considering a trip to the water parks like Typhoon Lagoon and Disney’s Blizzard Beach. A trip to the water parks during your summer Disney vacation is a great way to get away from hot days in Central Florida.
Tickets to the Disney water parks are a bit less expensive than amusement park tickets and can be a great way to extend your Disney World vacation. When making your packing list, include a bathing suit, swim shoes or flip flops, and a change of clothes, if desired. Sunglasses, a hat, and a waterproof bag can also be helpful to have in the water parks.
Consider also packing a waterproof pouch to protect your phone, ID, and credit cards. Another great idea is a portable mini safe that allows you to store your valuables in a small, portable locked pouch. This mini-safe can come in handy at water parks and pools, even beyond your Disney vacation.
Even if you don’t plan a trip to the Disney water parks, be sure to include some time at your hotel pool. It is a good idea to take a break from the long lines in the Florida sun at the parks. Cooling off in the pool is a great way to get a relaxing break mid-day. This is especially true during the hot weather of August in Central Florida.
Disney resorts provide pool towels, so don’t worry about packing those in your suitcase! Of course, you may want to include goggles, swim cover-ups and your favorite beach read. It’s a great idea to return to the parks in the evening during the summer season. Daytime temperatures dip down a bit at night. Be sure to check park hours in My Disney Experience before your vacation to plan your day.
What to include in your packing list for August: Water items
- swimsuits
- goggles
- sunscreen
- flip flops or water shoes
- swim diapers (if needed)
- cover-ups
- change of clothes
- waterproof bag
- pool books, magazines
- waterproof pouch for phone
Tank Tops and Short Sleeved Shirts
When you are heading to Disney World theme parks in August, be sure to pack comfortable, cool shirts. Tank tops and short-sleeved shirts will come in handy. This time of year, we want quick-drying breathable fabrics. These fabrics can wick away any sweat during the summer heat.
Are you riding water rides like Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom? It’s also helpful to have quick-drying fabrics for water rides. Consider Athleta for a higher-end summer tank and tee option or Old Navy for a more budget-friendly alternative.
Amazon also has some great options. I personally prefer tanks with wider shoulder straps to protect my shoulders and provide some modesty. I love these quick-drying options!
If you prefer a tank with your favorite characters from the Magic Kingdom, try one of these options! You can usually always find your favorite Disney character!
Layers: Light Jacket or Sweatshirt
I know it may seem surprising to pack any options with long sleeves. However, a light jacket or sweatshirt can be handy. If you visit indoor attractions, gift shops, or restaurants, many keep their building’s air conditioning on full blast! Ducking into a restaurant or indoor ride is a great way to cool off. One more layer is always a good idea, just in case you get a bit chilly.
Additionally, there is a good chance you will have some cooler temperatures in the early mornings or late evenings. One more layer can be helpful, even during the month of August. If you select a waterproof jacket, it may be your best option against any summer storms.
Shorts
For the most part, you will want some comfortable shorts in the Florida sun. Again, try to find some shorts that are quick-drying. Florida weather always holds a chance of rain. It is nice to have a pair of shorts that will allow you to walk around the parks comfortably.
I like shorts with a bit longer inseam so I don’t have to worry about showing too much on a roller coaster.
Long pants
Do you need long pants? This is probably a personal preference. If you make fine dining reservations, you may want to have a pair of long pants and a tailored top. Some have a personal preference for long pants and covering their legs. If so, just be sure to choose a light fabric like cotton or linen. Stay as cool as possible in hot weather!
Summer Dress and Sandals
Are you planning on a nice dinner at a fantastic Disney restaurant? Though the dress code is quite flexible at Disney, you might want to consider a nice summer dress and sandals for dining reservations. My personal preference after a long day in the Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios is to come back to the hotel room, take a long shower, and change into a dress for a nice dinner out with my family! Whether it is Sanaa, California Grill, or Citricos, it is always worth it!
What to wear to Disney World in August: Walking Shoes
Comfortable shoes are essential for any Disney trip and quite possibly the most important thing in your suitcase. You will, most likely, log many steps daily in Orlando. My personal favorites are my Brooks tennis shoes and my Keen sandals. They are the best shoes for keeping my feet dry and comfortable, even at the end of August in Florida weather!
I like to alternate each day to keep my feet comfortable. This also allows some time for shoes to dry, if needed, from getting wet during the day. Rothy’s makes some fantastic sandals if you want something dressier for shorter trips into the Disney World theme parks. They are also perfect for a dinner out.
My most important piece of advice is to try out your shoes! The last thing you want to do at Disney is trying out new shoes! Also, pack breathable and comfortable socks to prevent blisters during days in the parks.
Rainy Day Gear
Though August is not quite the hurricane season in Orlando, there is always a chance of rain in Florida. Be sure to pack a lightweight poncho or small umbrella. You will be prepared for any weather!
What to Bring to Disney World in August: Park Bag Essentials
Of course, you will want a good park bag for the Disney parks. I like to find a waterproof option with comfortable shoulder straps. I also always look for a side pocket for my water bottle for quick access to my hydration!
As far as items to include in your park bag for August, remember these essentials:
- portable charger: the Disney app will drain your battery
- fan (battery or paper)
- water bottle
- sunscreen
- sunglasses
- medications
- Magic Bands
- photo ID
- Insurance card
- credit card
- cash
- poncho/small umbrella
- Band-Aids
- candy or gum
- snacks

August is time for a few special events in August. The Epcot International Food and Wine Festival continues to run through August. Believe it or not, Halloween also starts at Disney World in August!
You can most likely catch tickets for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, so be sure to include a comfortable, cool costume if you participate!
